HISTORY
Season
16 was the ROTW Wing’s Seventh’s Full Season as a Wing.
In
the League Season 16 saw Defending Premiership Champions Qingdao Zhongneng
come from 5th place to storm to the lead after a battle with Sao
Paulo FC and DC United. It was a
remarkable come back. At one stage
it looked as if DC United, and even Sao Paulo FC might win, but Paul Weare
kept his composure, and Qingdao Zhongneng took control to win their 4th
Straight Premiership. Can anyone
stop them?
Like
Qingdao Zhongneng, Penarol came from behind to storm through a Division
that had Chicago Fire leading for a while, then Melbourne Victory, and then
Newcastle United, but then Penarol took the lead from a great 2nd
half of the season come back, and kept it.
They took the 1st Division title, and the top Promotion
spot to the Premiership in which it will be their first appearance, a
remarkable achievement. Newcastle United Jets who came second will return
to the Premiership after being relegated last season, so a good fight back
to get back in.
It
only took Independiente Santa Fe 3 or 4 matches to warm up in the 2nd
Division before they took control and held on to be promoted back to the 1st
Division. SC Corinthians, the cup
specialists, finally found the form needed for a league run, and were able
to take the 2nd Spot and get the promotion to the 1st
Division. I believe they can be giant killers in the 1st
Division.
Atlas
FC took control of the 3rd Division with their super keeper, but
they still had to score the points at the other end to win games. They did just that, and they took the 3rd
Division title with 3 games to go. A
great achievement even with a super keeper.
LA Galaxy the non managed team took second spot.
Atlas
FC were not only strong in the 3rd Division, they were also
strong in both the ROTW Wing Knockout Cup and the Inter Wing Cup. In fact they got to the finals of both
cups. The ROTW Wing Knockout Cup was
won by Melbourne Victory, who grabbed their first piece of silver ware with
a good display over Atlas FC in the final who was missing their Keeper.
Atlas
FC came back from that disappointment to beat a strong Qingdao Zhongneng in
the massive Inter Wing Cup, a fact that 4 ROTW Wing teams were the last
four in the Semi Finals, and Atlas became just the 2nd ROTW Wing
team behind SC Corinthians to win the Inter Wing Cup.
